This compression spring is a nice accessory for the edge pro since you can eliminate the use of the screw ball and replace it with a quick and easy way to switch the stones. All you need to do is unscrew the ball, remove the brass collar and slide the spring onto the arm. Then tighten the screw ball and now you can pop stones on and off effortlessly. I started off with the springs for quick changes with chosera stones. I wanted to used dmt 4 aligner stones since they are cheap and stay flat for profiling work - this works perfectly if you use with a 2 inch spacer that I made with tubing from the hardware store.

After using the spring I found that there was something more to be gained than speed, for me when I sharpen with out the spring, sometimes pressure on the knob would make the stone unscrew, if it was not tight. The stone would fall out and damage my edge. With the spring, it allows a bit of a turn if you put pressure on the knob while the stone stays in place. It helps you keep even pressure as you pass the stone over the edge. Seems to help me keep a consistent stroke.

This is a nice mod. It only saves a few seconds probably, but it is just less hassle to change each stone. My only concern really is how long the spring will last, but it is pretty inexpensive if you ever have to replace it.
