This is a fun little novelty item. I found it in a shop in Sanjo City. It's a tiny Japanese sword. It's not sharp and its purpose is supposed to be to cut mochi which is a small dessert item served in Japan. It could also be used as a butter knife or a letter opener but mostly it's just a fun little novelty item that I thought our customers would enjoy. The quarter is in the shot to give you some perspective. It measures about 5 inches.

I bought one for each of my "kids" (they're in their 20s) because they just recently discovered mochi ice cream for themselves. They love that these are intended for cutting mochi, and have used them already for that purpose. But I suspect they will find other excuses to brandish them.
